UNILORIN clears air on medical induction, pushes for higher quota

The Management of the University of Ilorin has dismissed as unfounded claims circulating on social media that 44 medical graduands who were not inducted last year would be merged with the 2025 graduating class for induction.
The clarification follows trending posts on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that the institution planned to induct the affected graduands alongside students completing their MBBS programme this year.
Speaking for the university, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Biodun Suleiman Alabi, explained that 194 students sat for the final MBBS examinations. Of that number, 175 passed outright while 19 had resits.
According to him, when the university approached the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for induction, the council approved only 150 candidates — the institution’s officially accredited quota.
The university subsequently ranked the successful candidates, and the first 150 were inducted in November 2025.
Prof. Alabi noted that although the Federal Government had announced plans to double admission quotas for medical students nationwide, the policy has yet to be implemented.
He added that the remaining 25 successful candidates, along with the 19 who later passed their resit examinations in January 2026, are still awaiting induction.
The Provost stressed that contrary to online reports, there has been no directive from the MDCN to merge the 44 graduands with the 2025 set.
He appealed to parents and students to remain calm, assuring them that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), and the management are actively engaging the MDCN to secure induction for the affected graduates.
He further disclosed that the Vice-Chancellor has initiated steps to invite the MDCN for a fresh accreditation exercise aimed at increasing the university’s current induction quota of 150, which would expand its carrying capacity for future graduands.
