Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s intention to seek re-election in 2027, calling it a misplaced priority.
Bucknor-Akerele served as deputy to former Lagos Governor Tinubu from May 1999 until December 2002, while Tinubu’s term continued until May 2007.
The 80-year-old appeared on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” program on Thursday.
Bucknor-Akerele, part of The Patriots under the leadership of former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, emphasized that the Tinubu presidency must urgently revamp the nation’s socio-economic framework.
Bucknor-Akerele expressed concern, stating that the president currently appears to be primarily focused on seeking a second term. She believes he should instead focus on what esteemed individuals like Emeka Anyaoku and others are working towards—an initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria for future generations.
The former deputy governor also cautioned that discontented youths could thwart the self-serving ambitions of certain politicians in the 2027 general elections.
We need to achieve full employment for our young people. Many are aimlessly wandering the streets, including graduates who have ended up taking security jobs. Is this truly what we want for Nigeria? I believe not.
