The rivalry between Orji Kalu and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, came into sharp focus following conflicting claims over who has been mandated by President Bola Tinubu to coordinate APC activities in the state.
While both figures have publicly asserted presidential backing, multiple indicators within the party suggest that Orji Kalu holds a strategic advantage rooted in long-standing political capital, expansive grassroots networks, and a proven history of electoral influence.
Party insiders point to Kalu’s enduring structures—particularly the OUK Movement and the Reality Organisation—which have, over the years, built a formidable presence across all 17 local government areas of Abia State. By contrast, although Benjamin Kalu occupies a high-ranking national office, his political base is widely seen as relatively recent and less expansive, with critics arguing that it lacks the depth and statewide reach required to command full party control.
Observers say the unfolding scenario reflects a familiar pattern in Nigerian politics, where influence and political machinery often outweigh formal titles. President Tinubu himself is frequently cited as an example, having maintained firm control as a party leader without holding office during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Within this context, Orji Kalu’s profile as a two-term governor, ranking senator, and long-standing political financier appears to give him an edge in the calculations ahead of 2027.
