Fear and confusion gripped the community surrounding the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) in Eziobodo, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, after suspected gunmen launched a late-night attack that left several persons injured and residents fleeing for safety.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, sparked widespread panic across the university environment as viral videos circulated online showing students, traders, and motorists running for cover amid gunshots.

Eyewitnesses alleged that more than 50 armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen invaded parts of the community near the Jamel axis, attacking residents and road users. Some social media posts claimed several people were killed during the assault, although no official casualty figure has been confirmed.

One of the viral videos showed a young boy receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the chaos, while another captured a commercial motorcyclist with gunshot wounds narrating how armed men suddenly emerged from the bush and opened fire on him.

According to the rider, the attackers attempted to block the road around the NDDC Solar Light area before shooting at him as he tried to escape.

Residents and students have expressed growing fears over worsening insecurity around the FUTO community, alleging repeated incidents of kidnapping, robbery, and attacks in recent months. Some locals claimed the warning signs had existed for weeks due to increasing reports of suspicious movements around the area.

According to the Whistler Newspaper, the Imo State Police Command however dismissed reports that Fulani herdsmen invaded the university community.

Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was an attempted abduction carried out by criminal elements, but security operatives and local vigilantes successfully resisted the operation.

According to the police, one victim sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while security agencies have intensified efforts to track down the attackers.

As of Thursday morning, there was no official confirmation that students were killed in the attack, despite widespread claims on social media.

Security presence has reportedly been increased around the university community to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
