Okporojo Killings: Ebonyi relaxes curfew, toughens other measures in Amasiri

Ebonyi state government has partially relaxed the 20 hours curfew earlier imposed on Amasiri communities in Afikpo Local Government Area following recent killings in Okporojo, Oso Edda, Edda local LGA.

 

The curfew which was from 2pm to 10 am of the following day has been reviewed to now start from 6Pm to 7am.

 

Governor Francis Nwifuru announced the development while briefing newsmen in his office on the outcome of the state security council meeting held on Tuesday.

 

The Governor however, said the schools will continue to remain closed until further notice.

 

He stated that the Council also resolved to introduce further stringent measures against Amasiri communities to ensure strict compliance to government directives, insisting that they must produce the severed, missing heads of their Okoprojo and Akpoha victims as earlier directed by the council.

 

The Governor who did not mention the further stringent measures decided by the Council however, explained that they were not imposed from the onset to unduly punish or witchhunt the people of Amasiri, but as means of protecting them and forestalling further escalation of the crisis.

 

He further informed that the Council resolved to charge all those arrested in connection with the crisis and the killings in Okporojo and Akpoha to Court immediately for prosecution.

 

Responding to questions from newsmen, Governor Nwifuru assured that a lot of progress has been made by the government toward unravelling the circumstances behind the crisis and restoring permanent peace in the affected areas.

 

The meeting was attended by the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi state command, CP Adaku Uche-Anya and other security chiefs in the state.
