The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has distributed 117 tricycles to Community Interest Groups in 13 Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State to promote waste management.
State Project Coordinator, Dr Philip Echiegu, told journalists in Abakaliki at the weekend that the main trust of the project was to support the communities and give them an alternative form of livelihood.
“The tricycles were 117 altogether, procured by the NEWMAP as part of intervention support project to Community Interest Groups (CIGs).
“This is also part of the efforts to checkmate gully erosion and protect the environment, as well as provide help for the evacuation of refuse from household-to-household in the state,” Echiegu said.
He said that the World Bank-Assisted Project, with counterpart funding from the Ebonyi State Government, was a community livelihood support programme.
“It is geared towards providing means of evacuation of refuse from households to designated points.
The distribution of the tricycles was flagged off on Sept. 9 by Gov. David Umahi.
