Borno State in North East Nigeria has been grappling with the devastating impact of Boko Haram insurgency for over 15 years.
Fear and confusion swept through Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Wednesday after a bomb explosion tore through a mosque during prayers, leaving several worshippers dead and others injured.
The blast occurred while worshippers were gathered inside the mosque, sending shockwaves across the busy market and triggering panic among traders and residents nearby.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion ripped through part of the building, killing some worshippers on the spot and injuring many others.
Moments after the blast, thick smoke billowed from the mosque as frightened traders abandoned their stalls and fled the area.
Some residents and passers-by were seen rushing to help the wounded, pulling victims from the debris before the arrival of emergency responders.
Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the scene to prevent further casualties and to enable an initial assessment of the situation. The presence of armed personnel brought the area under control, even as tension remained high within the market.
As at the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, while investigations were said to be ongoing.
The incident has once again cast a shadow over Maiduguri, a city that has endured years of insurgency-related violence, and raised renewed concerns over security in public places.
