Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has strongly denied rumors suggesting she has defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Kingibe described the speculation as entirely false and unfounded. She clarified that despite attending a major opposition coalition event where the ADC was adopted as a joint political platform for the 2027 elections, she remains firmly rooted in the Labour Party.
“I’m still in the Labour Party,” she said. “Any report that I’ve left is false, inaccurate, and a complete fabrication.”
Confusion over her political allegiance intensified after she appeared alongside top opposition leaders—including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi—at the coalition unveiling. The gathering formally introduced the ADC as the adopted party for the new opposition alliance, with former Senate President David Mark and ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola named as interim chairman and secretary, respectively.
While some attendees resigned from their former parties following the event, Kingibe stressed that her presence did not signify a formal defection. She clarified that any quotes attributed to her about committing to the ADC were taken out of context.
“I never said I was leaving Labour,” Kingibe insisted. “That statement was misinterpreted. My comments were in support of the coalition’s ideals, not a declaration of party switch.”
She further explained that any change in political affiliation, if it ever happens, would not be done quietly. “If I ever decide to change parties, it won’t be during lunch. It will be with noise and fanfare.”
Kingibe reaffirmed her loyalty to the Labour Party and her commitment to the people of the FCT, stating that both she and Peter Obi remain dedicated to the party’s values and mission.
