Insecurity: NIPR Fellow, Saadu Salahu seeks review of Nigeria’s Copy Right Law to check wrongful use of AI 

A pubic relations expert and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Alh Saadu Salahu, has stressed the urgent need for the federal government, particularly the National Assembly to review the Nigeria Copyright law to prevent unpatriotic elements from wrong use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in exacerbating sensitive issues of insecurity in the country.

 

He, however, commended both the federal and state governments for their relentless efforts at securing life and property of the people across the country.

 

Salahu, a senior adviser/counselor to the Kwara State governor, made the call in a lecture themed ‘Professionalism and Synergy in Public Relations Practice,’ which he presented at the 2025 get- together dinner organised by the State’s chapter of NIPR in Ilorin, the state capital.

 

The guest lecturer said that evidence of abuse of social media and misapplication of Artificial intelligence with negative consequences were the reasons some countries took legal steps to strike ingenious balance between free speech,public good and national security.

 

He cited Denmark , Australia and a few European Union (EU ) nations as example of the countries that had made legislations to check the abuse of social media and AI.

 

Salahu equally urged the government to engage AI experts in combating insecurity by asking them to develop AI-powered solutions in further support of Government ‘s efforts to combat insecurity and improve public safety.

 

He added that governments must curb the criminal use of technology, including AI and social media, regulate social media and educate influencers on the responsible use of AI and social media, stressing that security being responsibility of all , demands highest display of patriotism from all citizens .

 

“Misinformation , disinformation and fake news constitute part of serious dangers to current insecurity in the country “ he emphasised .

 

The NIPR Fellow reminded the professional public relations practitioners in today’s world of digital practice of the need to measure up to global standard set by the NIPR.

 

“Expectedly, we are and must be seen as professional public relations practitioners in management capacity for the good of our employer and the public or publics,” he stressed.

 

He added that they needed in-depth knowledge and skills of cutting edge technologies such as AI, social media monitoring management, content management system and crisis management software, to stay ahead of the curve as reputable public relations officer.

 

Salahu used the forum to thank and commended the Kwara State governor, AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq for giving him and many of his colleagues, a rare opportunity to be part of his exemplary leadership as governor of the state since 2019.

 

“He has made us extremely proud being the first governor to have appointed greatest numbers of media practitioners into enviable positions in his administration.

 

“It is on record that the governor has been rightly rated by credible local and international Organisations and experts as the best governor in transparency and accountability, good governance, education, health, socio-economic and infrastructural transformation, poverty alleviation, youths and women inclusion in governance, peace and security, urban renewal and ease of doing business.

 

“Governor AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq’s investment in digital literacy in order to empower students and youths in the state to fit into leadership position in digital economy is quite inspiring and commendable.

 

“Similarly, outcomes of pace-setting but just -concluded summit on Artificial Intelligence in Kwara State consolidates Kwara leadership position in Nigeria digital ecosystem”.

 

In her remarks, a ranking member of the National Council of the NIPR, Prof. Saudat Sallah AbdulBaki highlighted achievements of Dr.Ike Neliaku -led Council in repositioning the NIPR as a global professional body of great pride to all members and Nigeria.

 

AbdulBaki who is also the Dean of Faculty of Mass Communication , University of Ilorin urged members of the Kwara State chapter to sustain their mass participation in all the the NIPR programmes and activities lined up for 2026.

 

Dignitaries that attended the lecture include a former non executive director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd(NNPCL), Dr. Muhammad Ghali Alaaya, four Fellows of NIPR, Prof Saudat AbdulBaqi , Prof. Sunday Ododo , Oloriewe Raheem Adedoyin , the guest lecturer, chairman Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) and Kwara State ambassador for Renewed Hope Agenda, Alh AbdulLateef Gidado Alakawa, special adviser on Media, Alh Bashir Adigun, special adviser on Civic Engagement, Hajia Humuliaheri Ahmed Alaye, senior special assistant on Religion( Islam), Alh Ibrahim Danmaigoro and a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Engr.
