There is an imminent breakdown of law and order in Ozubulu the headquarters of Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Our correspondent gathered that the immediate past President-General Ozubulu Development Union (ODU), whose tenure expired on December 26, 2021 but have refused to vacate his office despite opposition to his tenure elongation efforts.
He has insisted on going ahead with his planned election today December 31, 2021, notwithstanding aletter from the State Government suspending the election indefinitely.
The immediate past President General of the community, Mr. Peter Uzokwe, on the evening of Thursday December 30 in a message posted on the official WhatsApp page of the community said: “As at the time of this briefing, I am neither in possession of the said letter nor been briefed by our supervising Ministry.”
“Oraifite held her election yesterday, though the position of PG couldn’t hold until a later date but all other officers were elected. In Ozubulu, we are determined that all officers must be elected tomorrow,” Mr Uzokwe concluded.
The said suspension order, which our Awka Correspondent confirmed, was dated December 29, 2021. The suspension letter was reported to have been delivered to ODU secretariat, but the secretariat staff acting on the instruction of the embattled former PG refused to acknowledge the letter.
In his own reaction, the former Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Valentine Iwuchukwu, who was forced to resign his position as the Electoral committee chief as a result of the leakage of a clandestine plan by the embattled former PG, to use him to disqualify one of the candidates presented for the post of PG by the Ezioha village, the village to which the position is zoned to and smuggle their preferred candidate who failed Ezioha primaries elections through the back door was quoted as saying:
“I want to be honest. If I am the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, I will not honour such a poorly written letter. I will not acknowledge the receipt until the right officer signs and delivers.
“The letter has not been served and it is unreasonable to stop preparation for the election. I’ve asked a few persons who ought to know but they claim ignorance of the letter. Let’s see how it goes.
“Those people that conjured the disjointed letter have not done anything noble and can not stop the several stars in Ozubulu from shining brighter. Complete waste of time. We live here, we die here. Time will tell.”
Meanwhile, a pressure group, ‘Maka Odi Nma Ozubulu’, is said to be mobilizing indigenes of the town to ensure that Mr Uzokwe whose tenure as the PG has long expired does not preside over today’s National Delegates Conference.
In a communique released Thursday evening the group called on all well meaning Ozubulu sons to ensure that only the two candidates presented to ODU by Ezioha will stand elections for the office of president General whenever the election will hold.
