#IgboMustGo Campaign: Atiku demands immediate investigation, arrest of promoters
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an urgent investigation and arrest of individuals promoting the divisive #IgboMustGo campaign on X (formerly Twitter). The hashtag has sparked outrage by advocating for the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwestern states.
Abubakar condemned the campaign, highlighting its threat to Nigeria’s unity and peace. “Such rhetoric is not only divisive but also endangers our peace and security, as our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country,” he stated.
Drawing parallels to the tragic consequences of unchecked hatred and bigotry in Rwanda, Abubakar stressed the need for decisive action. “We must learn from these lessons and act decisively. It is imperative to investigate, arrest, and prosecute individuals promoting ethnic discrimination and violence,” he urged.
Abubakar emphasized Nigeria’s strength in its diversity, noting that Lagos and the Southwest have long been melting pots of cultures. “The Igbo community, along with all other ethnic groups, is an integral part of this vibrant mosaic,” he added.
He called on all Nigerians to unite against divisive rhetoric and champion unity, tolerance, and understanding. “Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously,” Abubakar stated.
Expressing alarm over the silence from authorities five days after the threat emerged, he urged immediate action to deter similar agendas that threaten national security. “The government and security agencies must act swiftly to protect this fundamental principle and ensure that every Nigerian can live free from fear of discrimination or persecution,” he concluded.
Atiku Abubakar served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and was the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections.
