Gunmen abduct Fulafia Lecturer, demand N30m ransom

 

Gunmen at the late hours of Tuesday kidnapped a senior lecturer in the department of political science at the Federal University, Lafia, Chief Clement Uhembe, at his Lafia residence at about.

The suspected kidnappers, armed with sophisticated weapons took over the residence of the Lecturer, who is the immediate past commissioner for higher education in Nasarawa State, at about 8:30 pm.

Wife of the victim, Mrs. Amarya Uhembe, told our correspondent that the abductors, numbering about ten, ransacked their residence and found their way into one of the apartments where her husband was sleeping after returning from work and whisked him away.

According to her, “They (gunmen) came at about 8:30pm and started banging at the door while my husband was in the inner room. I moved close to the door to see who was knocking only to discover that they were heavily armed men.

“When I noticed they were armed men, I quickly tried to close the door, shouting for help before my husband came to join me in the struggle to close the door, even as they were dragging to force themselves into the house.”

Mrs. Uhembe explained further that, “My husband rushed to the door and we succeeded in closing it, but the gunmen kept pushing until they succeeded in using some objects in breaking the doors and wall to gain entrance.”

She revealed that the abductors later allowed her husband access to his phone which they used to communicate the family about their demand for the sum of N30million ransom.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Nasarawa State commands, Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the incidents to newsmen said they have organised their men into the area and called on anybody with first hand information to assist the police.

Meanwhile, residence of the victim has continued to receive sympathisers from within and outside the state.
