Group scores Buhari’s low on performance, says President failed in promises

 

A group known as Oodua progressives Cara Initiative (OPCI) has scored the President Muhammadu Buhari government low on the protection of lives and property of Nigerians.

OPCI specifically said that the country’s security system has collapsed, saying that the Federal Government has failed the citizens.

OPCI President Maruff Olanrewaju who spoke with reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital at the sideline of the group’s monthly meeting noted that the formation of Amotekun by the South West Governors was a fallout of the collapse of the security architecture of the country.

He added that President Buhari has refused to sack the service chiefs because most of them are of northern extraction.

Dr Olanrewaju, who is the former Kwara State Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) said, “Every discerning mind will agree with me that there is no security in Nigeria. Our security system has collapsed.

“Nigeria’s population is about 200 million, but in the last ten years billions of Naira has been spent on the issue of security.

“Yet we are currently experiencing insecurity. There is little or nothing the security agents can do about the issue of insecurity.

“Insecurity continues to thrive because the country’s very foundation is shaky. This crack in the country’s foundation is caused by ethnicity and mutual suspicion. Unfortunately, the heads of the security personnel are skewed in favour of a certain ethnic group.

“That is why President Muhammadu Buhari has not been able to sack the service chiefs in spite of their failure to perform. As a result of this, it will be very difficult for the government to secure the lives and property of Nigerians.

“The Buhari government is not ready to secure the lives and property of the citizens.”

He noted that the performance of the government is “a minus to the current administration, because when the then General Muhammadu Buhari was campaigning in 2015 he promised every Nigerian that within a short period insecurity would be a thing of the past.

“We thought that because President Goodluck Jonathan did not have military background, that was why he could not nip insecurity in the bud and we voted for Buhari, believing that within a year all the security challenges would be forgotten, but unfortunately reverse is the case.

“Today nobody can sleep with his two eyes closed. Every street now engages the services of private security personnel; simply because there is no adequate security of lives and property from the government.

“That is why the core Yoruba states arranged for Amotekun, because the central government had failed them. The formation of Amotekun was greeted with a lot of criticisms from section of the country.

“Specifically, Miyetti Allah said Amotekun was formed because of them, ostensibly to chase them out of Yoruba land.”

On the yawning of the Yoruba of Kogi and Kwara to return to their kiths and kin in South West, OPCI president said: “The merger of the Yoruba speaking area of old Kwara state to the North Central was done out of selfish interest.

“Those who did it then believed that if the Yorubas of the old Kwara would make them get what they were looking for at the centre.

“For me the call for the Yorubas of Kogi and Kwara state to be joined to their kinsmen though belated, but it is the right thing. You will agree with me that the oft-repeated call for the restructuring of the country is getting too late. When we were clamouring for restructuring then we foresaw the challenges that would come the way of Nigeria.”
