Gov Oyebanji calls for leadership overhaul, advocates curriculum reform in Nigeria

Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, has called for a fundamental overhaul in leadership development across Nigeria, stressing the urgent need for leadership education to be incorporated into the national school curriculum.

 

Speaking at the 11th Annual Public Lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Oyebanji underscored the fact that the country’s search for effective leaders has been ongoing since the colonial era.

 

In his address, the governor expressed concern that many leaders ascend to power based on sociopolitical connections and ethnoreligious affiliations, rather than the necessary skills and attitude for good governance.

 

“Our leadership problems stem from a lack of preparedness and the absence of key leadership qualities like accountability and responsibility,” Oyebanji said.

 

He proposed that leadership training begin at the grassroots level, starting from homes and extending into schools and the wider community. By embedding leadership values such as responsibility, vision, and accountability into school curricula, Oyebanji believes Nigeria can cultivate future leaders equipped to tackle the nation’s challenges.

 

Governor Oyebanji also urged citizens to take on leadership roles at every level of society, emphasizing that leadership is not confined to political positions but is crucial in every facet of life.

 

Themed ‘Leadership in Nigeria and Its Impact on the Next Generation,’ the event featured former FirstBank Nigeria Chairman, Ibukun Awosika, as a guest speaker. Awosika echoed Oyebanji’s sentiments, stressing the importance of enlightened leadership for societal advancement. She encouraged the audience to embrace true wisdom and integrity in leadership, as they are essential for sustainable development in Nigeria.

 

Both Oyebanji and Awosika highlighted that for Nigeria to thrive, leadership reforms must be prioritized, with education playing a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future leaders.
