Global Shaper Community Hub organises community outreach, cleanup in Kwara

The Global Shapers Community Ilorin Hub earlier today received league of volunteers who represented their groups accordingly in Ilorin Climate Action project tagged, “Community Outreach and Cleanup.”
The Outreach and Cleaning exercise focused on two communities in two different local Government Areas in Kwara State, Alanamu Community, Ilorin West L.G.A and Sabo Oke Community, Ilorin East L.G.A benefited from the outreach and clean up exercise.
SSA to the Executive Governor of Kwara State on Non Government Affairs, Mrs Oloruntyosi Thomas while addressing volunteers, described the interest of volunteers as a selfless effort which worth emulation, Kwara State Ministry of Environment and KWEPA also played their role in the exercise.
The groups which participated in the outreach are; Plogging Nigeria, Ilorin Club, Girl Up Evolve, The CEI Project, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kwara, NYSC SDGs CDS group, JCI Nigeria University of Ilorin, Green Globe Initiative (GGI) and Meadows Community Development Outreach.
Ilorin Hub Curator, Mr Kehinde Akinsola, said Ilorin Global Shapers Community is a network of innovative young people that come together from diverse professional backgrounds driven to solve problems in their communities.
Akinsola charged the general public to take actions that are going to affect our environment positively, noting that climate action is an inclusive step that requires contributions from everybody.
“We came to the community to make them know about the benefits of hygiene based on the research carried out on climate change and geographic information that Alanamu is liable to flood.
“I encourage the people of Alanamu Community to take up from where we stop, and elders should encourage the young ones on personal hygiene and environmental sanitation,” he said.
Azeez Tobi Abubakar, The Project Lead and Director of Programs of the Hub charged volunteers on steadfastness while the Founding Curator of the Hub Abdul-Qudus Oyindamola Yusuf in his opening speech described the impact of Global Shapers in Ilorin over the years.
One of the host Communities, Alanamu trouped out enmasse to lead the volunteers on sensitisation and clean up.
One of the volunteers, Bashir Atika, said the exercise is of great benefit to the host community, particularly in the aspect of health.
Shuaib Ajibola commended the initiative and urged the community to avoid climate disasters.
A youth advocate, Beki Mashood AbdulQaudri, who spoke on behalf of Balogun Alanamu and the people of the community lauded volunteers for finding the community worthy of the helpful initiative.
“On behalf of the Balogun and the people of Alanamu community, I extend our sincere appreciation to all the volunteers of Ilorin Global Shapers for finding our community worthy of this kind of helpful initiative that would help in preventing climate disasters,” AbdulQaudri saidi.
While engaging with the people of Sabo-Oke Community on measures to curb the incident of wild fire during Harmattan and dry season, a courtesy visit was paid by the Ilorin Global Shapers Community along with other Civil Society Organisations to the Community Chairman of Sabo-Oke Landlord Association, Surveyor General Bobadoye Akintola who commended the works of young people on Community sanity and development matters.
Akintola lamented the sad condition of bad drainage systems and poor waste generation, collection and treatment procedures in the community, he however urged development partners to include his community in subsequent programs, stating that his doors were always open to receive young development drivers.
One of the volunteers, Mr. Victor of Kwara Basketball Team said that, if people can practice waste segregation and self-waste sorting, wastes will not block drainage systems, which in turn curb flooding.
Ilorin Global Shapers Community was partnered by KwaraNGO, Ministry of Environment, Kwara State Environment Protection Agency, Kwara SDGs Office and Nigeria Police Force.
