Ghana’s longest serving First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, dies at 76
Ghana is mourning the death of its former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday morning, October 23, 2025, after a brief illness. She was 76.
Agyeman-Rawlings, the wife of the late Jerry John Rawlings — Ghana’s longest-serving leader who ruled the country both as a military head of state and later as a democratically elected president was a towering figure in Ghanaian politics and women’s rights advocacy.
Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed her passing. Tributes have since flooded social media, with many Ghanaians recalling her courage, activism, and dedication to empowering women across the country.
Later on Thursday, members of her family visited former President John Mahama to officially inform him of her passing.
In honor of her memory, Ghana’s Parliament adjourned its session, with lawmakers observing a moment of silence for the late First Lady.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings married Jerry Rawlings in 1977, and together they had four children, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who currently serves as a Member of Parliament under the NDC.
