Foundation tasks govt on hunger as ex-Ebonyi Rep donates foods to indigents

An Ebony youth-focussed, philanthropic Organisation, O.O Daniel Foundation, has challenged Nigeria leaders to consistently initiate programmes and policies aimed at ameliorating the prevalent hunger in the country, and improving the lives and wellbeing of the ordinary citizens.

 

The Foundation’s founder and president, Chief Daniel Okorie made the call on Wednesday in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.

 

He spoke while unveiling the planned 2025 end of the year activities of his foundation.

 

Okorie was eacting to the recent distribution of over 250 units of 50Kg bags of rice and other items by a former federal lawmaker, Chief Livinus Makwe, to some indigent and vulnerable people of Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, in collaboration with Federal Cooperative College Oji-River, Enugu state.

 

Commending the former House of Representatives member who represented OHANIVO federal constituency of the state between 2019 and 2023, for his commitment to grassroots development and support to indigent citizens, Okorie emphasized that the hunger and economic hardship prevailing in the country required empathy and programmes by leaders at all levels to cushion their negative effects.

 

Okorie whose foundation is committed to youth empowerment and educational development in Nigeria, described Makwe as one politician who has continued to inspire hope and showing leadership beyond public office through various philanthropic gestures.

 

The Nigerian, Canadian-based foundation president explained that apart from distribution of various food item and other forms of economic empowerment, Makwe has been supporting tertiary education in his area through the award of university scholarships to brilliant but indigent students in his OHANIVO Federal constituency.

 

Stressing that leadership must be anchored on selfless service to the people, he called on other past and serving political office holders to emulate the former Representatives by initiating programmes that directly improve the lives of the people.

 

He said: “Makwe’s sustained commitment to the welfare of his people after leaving office shows that true leadership is rooted in service.

 

“He has continued to touch lives positively especially the downtrodden, the elderly and the needy.

 

“We must come together as leaders and as a community to bear the burden of one another especially in this period of economic recession when many are in dire need of food.”

 

Speaking on the planned activities of his foundation, Okorie reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to collaborating with well-meaning individuals and organisations to promote education, youth empowerment and rural development in parts of Ebonyi state and beyond.

 

Okorie and Makwe are both philanthropist and indigenes of Ishiagu in Ivo Local government area of the state.
