In this exclusive interview, John Kalu Osiri speaks on the vision behind Osiri University, its tuition-free model, and what it means for Nigerian and African students seeking affordable, high-quality education.

Q: There is a growing concern about access to higher education in Africa. How does Osiri University respond to this challenge?

A: The challenge is real and urgent. Across Africa, and especially in Nigeria, we have millions of talented young people who are ready to learn but are blocked by financial barriers. Osiri University was created to remove that obstacle. We believe education should be accessible to all who are willing to pursue it. Our model is designed to ensure that cost is no longer the reason a student is left behind.

Osiri is described as a tuition-free university. How exactly does this work?

We have taken a different approach to the economics of education. Through strategic partnerships, innovative delivery systems, and a lean operational structure, we are able to provide high-quality education at little to no cost. The goal is not just affordability, but true access. We want students to focus on learning and impact, not on how to pay fees.

What makes Osiri University different from traditional institutions?

We emphasize mastery over memorization. Many systems reward students for recalling information, but we train them to think, create, and solve real problems. Our classrooms are interactive, our cohorts are small, and mentorship is central. We are building thinkers, innovators, and leaders, not just graduates.

Your philosophy includes integrating African knowledge systems. Why is this important?

For too long, education in Africa has been shaped by external frameworks that do not fully reflect our realities. At Osiri, we are intentional about grounding learning in African philosophies like Ubuntu: “I am because we are.” We also draw from Pan-African thought to ensure that our students understand their identity, their context, and their role in shaping the future.

What specific opportunities does Osiri offer Nigerian students?

Nigerian students stand to benefit immensely. They gain access to a globally relevant education without the heavy financial burden typically associated with studying abroad. Our online model allows them to learn from anywhere while engaging with a diverse, international community. More importantly, they are equipped with skills that are directly applicable to Nigeria’s development.

Osiri is still undergoing U.S. accreditation. Why should students trust the institution at this stage?

Every great institution starts somewhere. We are transparent about our process and committed to meeting rigorous standards. Our leadership, faculty, and governance structure reflect credibility and global experience. Students who join us now are pioneers shaping the future of education.

What role do faculty play in delivering the Osiri vision?

Our faculty are central to everything we do. We select them not just for academic excellence, but for integrity, impact, and a commitment to servant leadership. They mentor students closely, challenge them intellectually, and guide them toward meaningful contributions in society.

You often speak about Africa moving from “extraction to mastery.” What does that mean?

It means Africa must move beyond exporting raw materials to creating value. We should not just produce resources, we should process, innovate, and lead industries globally. Education is the foundation for that shift, and Osiri is designed to prepare students to drive that transformation.

What kind of students are you looking to admit into Osiri University?

We are looking for curious, driven individuals who want to make a difference. You don’t have to come from privilege, you just need the willingness to learn, grow, and contribute. If you are committed to creating impact, you belong at Osiri.

Finally, what message do you have for young Nigerians who feel discouraged about their educational future?

Do not give up on your dreams because of financial limitations. The world is changing, and new opportunities are emerging. Osiri University is one of those opportunities. If you are ready to learn and lead, there is a place for you here.
