For all practical purposes, the synonym of moral goodness is happiness, and the antonym is sorrow. Every man desires to be happy, even the sadist whose happiness depends on the sorrow of others.Man’s desire for the good – for happiness – is spelt out in the value he cherishes. In his book, “The Analysis of International Relations, Professor of International Peace, Dr. Karl W.Deutsch of Harvard University identified eight basic values that men desire most: “Wealth, Power, Respect (or Status), Rectitude (Righteousness), Well-being (or Sense Of Gratification, Enlightenment (or Knowledge),Skill and Affection (including Friendship and Love).” According to him, the instrumental values to these are,”Security, Freedom, Integrity, Dignity, Legitimacy and Cognitive consonance.” Moral goodness is the bond between one value and the other among these values.
