#ENDSARS: Buhari talks tough, tells the youth, ‘enough of the protests and violence’
President Muhammadu Buhari this Thursday evening, October 22, 2020, called on aggrieved Nigerian youths to end the over two weeks #ENDSARS protests that this week degenerated into on-going violence in some parts of the country.
He made the call in a 7pm nationwide broadcast that lasted some 12 minutes.
The President noted that his administration earlier accepted the five-point demand of the #EndSARS protesters and immediately set in motion a machinery to implement it.
He recognised the right of the youths and other citizens to peaceful protest but slammed those who hijacked the protests to unleash mayhem across the country and make life uncomfortable for both Nigerians and visitors.
Buhari highlighted what his administration is doing to reduce suffering in the country and appealed to the protesters to take advantage of the administration’s empowerment programmes.
“I therefore call on our youths to discontinue the street protests and constructively engage government in finding solutions.
“Your voice has been heard loud and clear and we are responding,” he said.
The President used the opportunity to commiserate with victims of the protests, including the Nigeria Police. He appreciated the efforts of state governors in checking the crisis and restated his administration’s commitment towards the preservation of the country’s unity, as well as peace and order.
