Edna Ulaeto, a staff member of OrderPaper, has been released from DSS custody following swift intervention by the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria.
Ulaeto was arrested on October 18, 2024, after OrderPaper published an inaccurate report claiming DSS agents had invaded the National Assembly as part of a plot to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The DSS cited concerns over the false report, which they said posed national security risks and caused significant embarrassment both locally and internationally. Despite OrderPaper issuing a retraction and apology, the DSS sought to clarify the source of the misinformation.
Following IPI Nigeria’s intervention, the DSS released Ulaeto later the same day. IPI Nigeria acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and urged journalists to prioritize accuracy and ethical reporting.
Tobi Soniyi, IPI’s Legal Adviser, stressed the need for journalists to verify facts and avoid sensationalism to protect the integrity of the press and maintain national stability.
