Demanding new aircraft for VP Shettima amidst Nigeria’s economic crisis, highly insensitive – Obi
Labour Party leader and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned a recent call for a new aircraft for the Vice President, describing it as “insensitive” and “unconcerned” about the dire economic situation facing Nigerians.
In a statement posted on his X account, Obi pointed to the “untold hardship” facing citizens, highlighting Nigeria’s position as one of the “eleven worst-governed African nations” and among the “20 most hungry nations” in the world.
“Our nation remains the poverty capital of the world, with our per capita income crashing further from $1700 in 2023 to $1109 this year,” Obi lamented.
He further emphasised the ongoing national electricity grid collapse, which has occurred eight times this year, and the subsequent impact on businesses and households.
Obi questioned the necessity of a new jet for the Vice President, highlighting the example of Indonesia, a nation with a robust economy, which only procured a Presidential jet after achieving sustained economic growth.
He emphasised that the current Presidential jet should be used for essential trips.
“It is time to sit down and find solutions to our litany of challenges for the wellbeing of the people and the development of our country,”
Obi concluded, calling for a commitment to selfless service and prioritizing the needs of the people.
Obi’s statement has reignited the debate on government spending and priorities in the face of Nigeria’s pressing economic and social challenges.
