Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, pledging that justice will be served as disciplinary measures are initiated against the officer involved.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has sparked concern, prompting swift action from police authorities.

According to preliminary findings, operatives from the Effurun Area Command responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The report indicated that a suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

However, during efforts to take the suspect into lawful custody, the situation escalated. The team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, reportedly discharged his firearm in clear violation of established police procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.

In response, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force in a statement by the Force spokesman, DCP Anthony Placid, has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, they are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, where they will face summary disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police expressed condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them that due process would be followed.

“The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

He also appealed to the public to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations and disciplinary procedures are ongoing.

Reiterating its stance, the Police Force emphasized its zero tolerance for misconduct, stressing that extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any behavior that erodes public confidence will not be condoned.
