President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his delegation to the United Kingdom are to go into isolation after spending about two weeks in London.
This is coming after Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, the UK High Commissioner who was seen in close contact with the President on his arrival at the Airport in London and other members of the embassy staff, reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
The entire Nigerian High Commission in Central London is reportedly now in complete lockdown for 10 days in observance of UK COVID-19 regulations.
President Buhari was accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd) and the Director General of National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, among others.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed that the President and members of his delegation would have to go into isolation, in line with the guideline for international travels.
“Mr President and all of those on his delegation will isolate in line with NCDC guidelines for international travel. They all tested yesterday (Friday) and will follow up with another test in due course,” the presidential spokesman said on Saturday.
President Buhari returned to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Friday, after about two weeks break to the United Kingdom.
The President, who left Nigeria on July 26, stayed back in the United Kingdom for a medical check-up after participating in the Global Education Summit on Financing Global Partnership for Education (GPR) 2021-2025.
UNICAL launches attack against sexual harassment, extortion, exam malpractices
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been hit by a series of scandals including extortion, sexual harassment and examination malpractices allegedly committed by its academic staff, prompting the authorities to launch a probe.
The university management said it has identified the culprits, vowing to make them face an appropriate disciplinary committee.
In a memo dated August 10, 2021 addressed to the university community and endorsed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Professor Michael P. Okon, the university disclosed that it has identified the departments and teaching personnel involved in the “obnoxious and abhorable acts.”
The memo titled: “Obnoxious and Abhorrable Acts of Sorting Extortion and Sexual Harassment”, the university said it is aware that some of the lecturers involved in the acts also allowed students to write examinations “at homes, hotels and relaxation places”.
The memo read: “It has come to the knowledge of management that some teaching staff have revived the obnoxious and abhorrable acts of sorting and sex for grade/sexual harassment.
“Some departments and lecturers have been specifically fingered and investigations have commenced. Management also has information to the effect that lecturers have to be giving students scripts to write exams at homes, hotels and relaxation places,” the memo alleged.
“All those involved in these despicable activities are hereby warned to desist and repent. In fact, they will soon be invited to interact with the disciplinary committee,” the University threatened.
