Breaking Down Barriers: Prof Zambwa canvasses promotion of integrity in higher education
In a thought-provoking virtual lecture, Professor Joseph Zambwa of Modibbo Adama University Yola delivered a stirring presentation on ‘Rebuilding the Broken Walls of Integrity in the Higher Education System while Sharing Knowledge’ to an audience of over 18 countries, including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
Joseph Zambwa, professor of Industrial Technology Education, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Nigeria highlighted that academic corruption is a global issue, citing examples of exam malpractice in Nigeria, fake degree programs in South Africa, and systemic inequalities in the United States.
“No country is immune to academic corruption,” he emphasized, stressing that integrity is essential in academia, and that “publication cannot replace character.”
He noted that integrity must be institutionalized through policies and clear consequences for misconduct. “Economic pressures, moral decay, and poor leadership have fueled corruption and eroded standards,” he said, adding that solutions lie in “stronger ethics education, fair admissions, and transparent processes.”
Professor Zambwa also emphasized the importance of leadership by example, sharing personal anecdotes of refusing gifts from students and returning unspent funds. “Integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct must remain the foundation of scholarship,” he stressed.
The lecture sparked a lively Q&A session, with participants raising concerns about “sex-for-marks” scandals, private institutions prioritizing profit over quality, and lecturer accountability. Professor Zambwa offered practical solutions, including policy reforms and mentorship.
The lecture concluded with a renewed commitment to rebuilding trust in higher education, one act of integrity at a time.
“Rebuilding integrity is not the task of a few, but the responsibility of all, leaders, educators, students, and society at large,” Professor Zambwa emphasized.
