BREAKING: INEC sends 2027 poll schedule to National Assembly amid Electoral Act uncertainty

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has finalized and released a preparatory timetable for the 2027 General Elections, despite the National Assembly’s ongoing delay in passing the amended Electoral Act.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja at a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), reports The Eagle online.
While he noted that INEC has made its submissions to the National Assembly, Amupitan conceded that some items in the schedule of activities could be impacted by the time the lawmakers pass the electoral act.

He, however, said for now, the commission has no choice than to rely on the subsisting Act for its activities.
The commission appears to be operating under the existing Electoral Act 2022, which mandates that a Notice of Election be published at least 360 days before the polling date (a deadline that falls in February 2026).
