Pacific Island nation of Kiribati became first country to enter new year 2026
Kiribati has become the first country in the world to welcome the New Year 2026, with celebrations starting on December 31, 2025.
While many countries were still counting down to midnight, people in Kiribati had already stepped into the new year.
This early celebration happens because of the country’s location near the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean. The position of this line decides when different countries enter a new day or a new year. Kiribati sits east of this line, allowing it to welcome the new year before any other country.
The first place in Kiribati to mark the start of 2026 is the Line Islands, also known as Kirimati or Christmas Island. The island operates on the UTC+14 time zone, which is 14 hours ahead of many parts of the world. This means the new year arrived there at about 2:00 pm UAE time and 3:30 pm Indian Standard Time, even while December 31, 2025 was still ongoing in many countries.
As people in other parts of the world were still having breakfast or lunch on December 31, 2025, residents of Kiribati were already celebrating the arrival of 2026.
After Kiribati, New Zealand was next in line to welcome the new year, followed by cities such as Auckland and Wellington, which celebrated roughly 90 minutes later. On the other end of the timeline, American Samoa and the Howland and Baker Islands were the last places to bid farewell to 2025.
Meanwhile, messages of goodwill began to appear on social media as users sent New Year wishes to the people of Kiribati. One user wrote, “Happy New Year to everyone in the Kiribati Islands! Kiribati is the only country that exists in all four hemispheres.”
Another message read, “Sending a heartfelt Happy New Year to the people of Kiribati. May you enjoy health, peace, and prosperity, just as your national motto says: ‘Te Mauri, Te Raoi ao Te Tabomoa.’”
With these celebrations, Kiribati officially became the first nation to say goodbye to 2025 and welcome 2026.
