Many commuters are feared dead after a suspected bomb explosion rocked the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau highway in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Saturday.

The blast, said to have occurred in the afternoon, threw travellers into panic, forcing motorists and passengers to abandon their vehicles and flee the area amid fears of a possible follow-up attack.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Zamfara State, Yazid Abubakar, said security agencies were aware of the incident but were still gathering details.

Speaking during a telephone interview, he said:

> “I can confirm that there was a blast in that area, but it just happened. I can’t give details yet. I will update you later.”

Shortly after the explosion, videos began circulating on social media showing distressed travellers running for safety and leaving vehicles stranded along the highway.

Reacting via X (formerly Twitter), a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) House of Assembly candidate in Kaduna State, Nuhu Sada, described the incident as yet another deadly attack on innocent citizens.

He called on security agencies to move swiftly to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.

Meanwhile, some social media users alleged that the explosion may have been triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly planted by bandits. However, authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of the blast or release information on casualties.

Security agencies are expected to intensify investigations as residents and road users await further updates from the authorities.
