Lawmakers urge Tinubu to end Nnamdi Kanu’s prosecution, seek political solution 

A coalition of federal lawmakers under the banner of the Parliamentary Action Group in Defense of Justice and Democracy has formally appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discontinue the prosecution of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and initiate a political dialogue aimed at lasting peace in the Southeast.

 

In a letter dated October 13, 2025 and addressed to the President at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, the lawmakers said their resolution followed a closed-door strategic meeting and extensive consultations across party lines and ethnic groups.

 

They described their intervention as a national interest effort driven by the urgent need for reconciliation and stability.

 

According to the signatories, several factors informed their decision, including:

 

1. The need for national healing and unity.

 

2. The Federal Government’s history of negotiating with militants and agitating groups in other parts of the country.

 

3. The security crisis in the Southeast which has persisted since 2015 and intensified from 2021.

 

4. Multiple domestic court and international tribunal rulings said to favour Kanu.

 

5. A rising national groundswell of support for his release.

 

Citing these concerns, the lawmakers urged President Tinubu to immediately direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to exercise constitutional powers to halt Kanu’s trial.

 

They further appealed to the President to open a constructive dialogue which they believe could lead to a “just political solution” to the long-running agitation.

 

“We are grateful to you, our dear President, for Your Excellency’s prompt consideration of our request,” the letter read, adding that the group remained respectful of the Presidency and committed to national stability.

The Parliamentary Action Group said the moment was ripe for decisive action, insisting that ending Kanu’s prosecution and opening channels of dialogue could help restore peace and strengthen national cohesion.
