Rivers govt wields the big stick as Gov Fubara cancels N134bn deal signed off by Ibas, orders fresh review
The Rivers State Executive Council has officially revoked the ₦134 billion contract awarded for the reconstruction of the ageing State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt.
The contract, which was approved during the tenure of Vice Admiral Ikot Ete Ibas (rtd) as the Sole Administrator of the state, was nullified at Thursday’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Following the cancellation, the Council ordered the construction firm, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to refund the ₦20 billion mobilisation fee it had earlier received.
In a related development, the Council constituted a six-member committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, to assess and recommend the establishment of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across the state to support external examinations.
The Council also directed the flood control committee, headed by Prof. Odu, to immediately implement measures to tackle flooding across the state while warning residents against blocking drainage systems.
The session, attended by the Deputy Governor, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, eight retained commissioners, and the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Education, reviewed major contracts and policies executed during the six-month emergency administration in Rivers State.
