Effective Policing: Nwifuru charges Nigeria Police on community leadership involvement

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has identified Police-community relation and community leadership involvement in the fight and prevention of crimes as germane in achieving secure and crime-free environments in Nigeria.

 

Nwifuru made the observation while addressing the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 9, Kanayo Uzuegbu, and his team during a courtesy visit to the Governor in his office, Wednesday in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital.

 

Uzuegbu was in the state on official familiarization tour of the commands and formations of the Force within the zone.

The Governor noted that community leaders involvement in fighting crimes is necessary to complement the efforts of the security agencies, adding that the prevalent limited number of security personnel against the demands of the vast population has made such involvement and collaboration even more imperative.

 

Nwifuru who attributed the continuous increase in criminal activities in Nigerian to declining morals and community values advocated that the charge of a people’s security should be entrusted in the hands of officials who understand the culture and traditions of the people, maintaining that such a strategy would guarantee respect for, and the restoration of lost cherished community values in the cause of crime fighting.

 

The Governor further voiced his support for the much debated State Police, stressing that apart from complimenting the efforts of the federal police force, the state police would be a very potent instrument in more effectively addressing certain peculiar security needs of the states.

 

While appreciating the Commissioner of Police in the state, Anthonia Adaku Uche-Anya, other officers and men of the command for their dedication and diligence, Nwifuru commended all Security agencies in the state for expanding relationship to community leaders and the youths which has tremendously reduced crimes in the state.

 

He further commended the Police in the state for not indulging in media trials which he said, often scuttle investigations.

 

Extending a warm welcome to the AIG, Governor Nwifuru urged him to assist the state boost its dwindling quota in the Nigeria Police Force.

 

Stating his mission, the AIG said he was in the state to familiarize and interface with the command and its people.

 

Uzuegbu expressed pride in the operations of the police command, stating that criminal activities has been reduced to the barest minimum in the state.

 

He appreciated the Governor for his continuous assistance to the command in its duties and operations in the state, stating: “no amount of praise can be enough to appreciate what you are doing in the state.”
