Whenever and wherever governance is being discussed in the world the incursion of the military around the world will forever be a point of reference. Nigeria, because of her population and her many years of military rule as well as her visible activities around the world, will always feature prominently in such discussions.
Once more, l shall delve into the advent of the military government in Nigeria. I was just over 21 years old then and had completed six years of my secondary school It was my first month in the job market when the boys in green khaki uniform struck. They were the successors to the native pioneer rulers of Nigeria. ln addition to expanding the frontiers of the social excesses of the civilian rulers, the military governors sowed new species of seeds of unfaithfulness and dishonesty into the civil service. The evil seeds gave birth to a myriad of other vices-bribery, corruption, cultism, nepotism, fraud, out-right stealing of millions of Naira often changed to dollars and carried in “Ghana Must Go” bags (heavy duty straw bags).
These were the periods of empty boast and hollow promises by succeeding coup plotters. In their national broadcast to usher in their regime, they often rubbished the civilian government with series of its offences against the nation. Hearing such broadcast one would be tempted to heave a sigh of relief that a savior had come. A few months later it would be discovered that the broadcast was complete balderdash! The military governors often handed over power to their surrogates after a sham election exercise. The candidate with the highest bid got elected to whichever post he had contested for.
A society that sells it’s birthright to politicians is doomed. The society that accepts leaders who compromise their conscience and integrity to strengthen their political positions deserves nothing but a brutal government. Unfortunately however, the few good people who refuse to join the evil doers often suffer along with the many selfish, thoughtless and incorrigible supporters of the evil political ruling class.
