Independence Day: Amidst growing discontent over widespread hardship, President Tinubu promises economic reforms’ll yield positive results
In a national broadcast commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation, acknowledging the challenges faced by many Nigerians while emphasizing economic reforms, security improvements, and a call for unity.
“I am deeply aware of the struggles many of you face in these challenging times,” he stated, recognizing the rising cost of living and the urgent need for meaningful employment.
Tinubu expressed optimism that his administration’s economic reforms, which have attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investments in the past year, would soon yield positive results.
“The economy is undergoing the necessary reforms and retooling to serve us better and more sustainably,” he assured citizens, highlighting the Federal Executive Council’s approval of Economic Stabilisation Bills aimed at creating a more business-friendly environment.
On the security front, Tinubu reported significant progress in the fight against terrorism, noting that over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been eliminated in the past year. “Our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry,” he declared, emphasizing the commitment to restoring peace, particularly in the northern regions affected by insecurity. He also announced the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund in response to recent flooding and plans for integrity tests on dams to prevent future disasters.
Highlighting the importance of investing in Nigeria’s youth, who constitute over 60% of the population, Tinubu announced the establishment of a National Youth Conference. “This conference will be a platform to address the diverse challenges and opportunities confronting our young people,” he said, stressing the need for their voices to be heard in shaping policies that affect their future. Initiatives such as the 3 Million Technical Talents program and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund were also outlined to empower youth through education and skill development.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, Tinubu emphasized resilience and the need for unity in overcoming challenges. “Despite the many challenges that buffeted our country, we remain a strong, united, and viable sovereign nation,” he stated, urging Nigerians to embrace their diversity as they work toward a better future.
In closing, Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential, stating, “Better days are ahead of us. The challenges of the moment must always make us believe in ourselves.” His message was clear: despite current difficulties, a united effort can pave the way for a brighter future for all Nigerians.
