The darkness in most neighborhoods accentuated the eerie silence that greeted the announcement.The masses were at a loss of what was happening, but with the fierce-looking, heavily armed soldiers parading the streets at day-break, the story was quickly understood.No one dared to ask any question. No shouting, no protests, no group meetings, no assembly of people. Even the members of the National Assembly and State Assemblies, having been cowed into total submission, had scampered into obscure places for safety.No one dared to raise a voice of opposition, not with rifles pointing ominously at passers-by.
That was the period Nigerian wells were brimming with oil, much of which was yet to be tapped anyway. Even then, there was already plenty of oil money but much less goodwill to quickly utilize it to develop the nation.Curiously, even the refineries that could bring in more money were not developed. At the instance of the rulers, accruing oil money was being shared, be it so inequitably. More money was being wasted on frivolous and grandiose projects than being saved for the rainy day.l once heard of a Nigerian minister who was interviewed by the press media in London on Nigeria’s economy. The minister declared that money was not Nigeria’s problem but what to use it for was her headache ! Instead of building factories and infrastructures and developing the mines and agriculture sectors, ministers were often busy working to enlarge their personal pockets. Since then the practice of stealing and hiding the loot underground and in foreign countries became the norm. Even now that many foreign countries have declined to co-operate with evil, the doers of evil who have mastered the art of stealing and concealing are devising new methods of doing so in Nigeria.
The unpaid teacher, without any means of livelihood other than teaching, resulted to skipping the classroom to find ways and means to feed himself and his Family. Untaught pupils on the other hand became truants and vagabonds in the society. Greed, selfishness and executive lawlessness in the high echelon of government drove the teachers out of the classroom into the streets. Soon the respectable teachers got caught-up in the societal vices.Aiding and abetting ……..(TO BE CONTINUED IN EXCERPT XXX)
