The government could no more pay the teachers’ emoluments regularly like before. Teachers were owed several months in salaries and wages.Basic school requirements were no more provided. Dilapidated school infrastructures were not renovated, resulting in children learning under leaking roofs. Consequently the morale of teachers receded to the lowest ebb. And then the once enviable Nigerian education sector became a laughing stock in the comity of nations. Was this scenario peculiar to Nigeria alone? Of course no. Corruption and evil characterised governance and government in many third world countries after the departure of their colonial masters. This has been the scenario in most third world countries, many of which were formerly ruled by non-natives.
The most horrendous problem faced by Nigeria and most of the third world countries in the 20th century was the introduction of the military into civil governance, an unfortunate aberration. Just as a politician not trained in the use of arms and ammunition, to take it upon himself to go to the war front, is courting disaster, so a soldier ruling a nation without the knowledge of civil administration brings calamity to the nation. This is the major contributing factor to the instability being witnessed around the globe now.Just as l said earlier, evil conducts evil, evil radiates evil, evil transmits evil and spreads evil.l would like to expanciate on the military government around the world, using the ertswhile Nigerian military government as a case study.
As done in other countries of the world before then, the Nigerian military government in 1966 January crept into Nigeria quietly, surreptitiously in the middle of the night like a small-scale armed robber. Of course, small or big, no armed robbery is a tea party affair,if you had an experience of it as l once had in my residence here in Nigeria in the “wee hours” of the night. Yes, the Nigerian military government came singing uncommon tunes, and soon followed it with a previously unheard of introduction, “My fellow country men and women…….bla bla blah.” (TO BE CONTINUED IN EXCERPT TWENTY-NINE).
