#EndBadGovernance: Current unrest not a protest, but lawlessness – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has issued a stark warning about the ongoing unrest, asserting that it has deviated from the principles of a legitimate protest and has become a platform for destruction and anarchy. He expressed grave concern over the escalating violence and looting, which he believes undermine the protest’s original intent to address governance issues.
“This is not a protest by any means,” Kalu declared. “What we are witnessing is a blatant disregard for the rules and guidelines that govern peaceful demonstrations. This chaos is endangering lives and property and derailing our economy further.”
Kalu underscored that while the right to protest is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), these rights do not extend to acts of violence and vandalism. He pointed out that the ongoing disorder is exacerbating Nigeria’s economic challenges, which have been severely impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“Protesters must understand the broader economic context,” he said, noting that many nations, including the US, UK, Canada, and European countries, are still grappling with the pandemic’s fallout. “Nigeria needs time to heal and stabilize its economy, just like these countries.”
Kalu called for an immediate cessation of the unrest and urged protesters to seek dialogue and mediation instead. “This senseless destruction will only lead to more harm. If the aim is truly to achieve better governance and economic stability, then reason and constructive engagement are necessary.”
He proposed several strategies for economic recovery, including diversifying the economy, investing in infrastructure, supporting small businesses, and promoting good governance. “Implementing these strategies requires a united effort from the government, private sector, and civil society,” he emphasized.
Kalu concluded with a plea for calm and reason. “For the sake of our nation’s future, let us halt this destructive path and work together towards sustainable growth and prosperity.”
