Senator Orji Kalu hails Organised Labour for accepting N70,000 minimum wage, applauds President Tinubu

In a significant development for Nigerian workers, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has commended labour unions for their acceptance of the newly approved minimum wage of N70,000, sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu.

 

The Senator praised the President for prioritizing workers’ welfare, stating, “I specially congratulate the President for thinking right about the welfare of the Nigerian workers.”

 

In a statement he personally signed, Senator Kalu also lauded the collaborative efforts of the Minister of Labour, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Chief of Staff to the President, and other stakeholders who played crucial roles in reaching this agreement with the labour unions.

 

Despite his earlier suggestion of a N90,000 minimum wage, Senator Kalu expressed satisfaction with the approved N70,000, describing it as a “decent minimum wage.” He highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years, ensuring ongoing adjustments in line with economic realities.

 

Senator Kalu urged Nigerians to be patient with the President, emphasizing that this move signifies the administration’s intent to address the current economic hardships.

 

“I also urge Nigerians to be patient with Mr. President as this action is a pointer that his administration would bring relief to Nigerians in the current hard situation.

 

“This approval marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s labour relations, setting a positive precedent for future negotiations between the government and labour unions.”

 

The new minimum wage is expected to bring much-needed relief to workers and contribute to economic stability and growth.
