Nigeria Decides: EFCC operatives storm Obi, Tinubu’s polling units ahead voting
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives were on Saturday morning seen at the polling units of Mr Peter Obi, and Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidates respectively.
The officials who came in an unmarked white Toyota Hiace bus, arrived Obi’s Amatutu ward two, polling unit 019, at exactly 10:25 am.
They, however, declined interviews from journalists.
The leader of the team had a brief chat with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the unit, urging him to call the commission’s helpline if they sought the help of any kind.
The leader also had a brief chat with Obi, who was coming back from what was understoof as a tour of the village.
The team however, left the polling unit, promising to return soon.
Obi, as the time of filing this report was still being expected at his Amatutu ward two, polling unit 019, where he would cast his ballot.
That EFCC officials spotted at Tinubu’s polling unit, arrived before the commencement of Saturday’s elections.
Tinubu, one of the four leading presidential candidates, is expected to vote at his polling unit 085 in ward 3, Ikeja LGA, Lagos state.
Voting was yet to commence at the polling unit as of 9:50 am, as voters waited for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The former governor of Lagos State was also yet to arrive at the venue for accreditation and voting.
The delay in the commencement of voting occured despite INEC’s directive that voting would commence by 8:30 am.
At the venue, the EFCC officials were seen alongside other security operatives on the ground to ensure a peaceful atmosphere and clampdown on suspected fraudulent activities during the elections.
The EFCC on Friday, blocked the sum of N32.4 million suspected to be for buying of votes in the state.
Abdulrasheed Bawa, the EFCC chairperson, had earlier advised operatives of the agency assigned to monitor elections “to show courage and not give room for unscrupulous persons to undermine the integrity of the elections through financial Inducement.”
