Human rights activist and the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has distanced himself from the opposition conference held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Saturday.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, Sowore declared that the nation needs genuine alternatives to the current government and not “recycled failures”.
Opposition leaders from several political parties converged in Ibadan on Saturday, where agreements were made ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event was attended by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former governors of Anambra, Kano and Rivers States – Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi respectively.
Also at the event were former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, PDP factional National Chairman, Turaki and former Senate President, David Mark among others.
However, as a leader of an opposition party, Sowore was conspicuously absent from the summit.
Reacting, Sowore described the politicians at the event as those who “held Nigeria to ransom for years. Those who presided over the stagnation, corruption, and systemic decay of the country.”
The activist asserted that his party, the AAC “will not be part of any charade designed to recycle failed political actors under the guise of “opposition”.
He said, “Instead, we are committed to presenting a formidable, people-driven alternative. One rooted in integrity, accountability, and genuine transformation.
“We will mobilize Nigerians across the country to rally behind a credible vision that rejects the decadence and deception represented by both the @OfficialAPCNg and their opportunistic counterparts in ADC, PDP, Labour Party and elsewhere.
“Nigeria does not need a rearrangement of the same broken pieces, it needs a complete break from the past,” Sowore added.
