Boko Haram Resurgence: Senate demands suspension of political activities in Borno, Benue, others

Amid a resurgence of deadly attacks linked to Boko Haram, the Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend political activities in parts of the country most affected by insecurity, including Borno and Benue states.

The call was led by Ali Ndume, who raised alarm over the worsening security situation, warning that continued political gatherings could endanger lives.

According to Ndume, the scale and frequency of recent attacks signal a dangerous trend that requires urgent national attention and decisive intervention.

“There is a need to prioritise the safety of Nigerians above political engagements at this time,” Ndume said during plenary, stressing that intelligence and recent incidents point to an escalation in violence.

The resolution followed renewed attacks in the North-East and parts of the Middle Belt, where communities have come under repeated assaults, leading to deaths, displacement, and destruction of property.

Lawmakers warned that political rallies and large gatherings could become soft targets for insurgents and other armed groups if urgent precautions are not taken.

The Senate also urged security agencies to intensify military operations, strengthen intelligence sharing, and take proactive steps to restore confidence in affected communities.

Analysts say the recommendation reflects growing concern within government circles over the ability of security forces to effectively contain evolving threats across multiple regions.

Borno State, the epicentre of insurgency, has witnessed renewed Boko Haram attacks in recent months, raising fears of a resurgence despite years of counterterrorism efforts.

Benue State has also continued to grapple with persistent violence, further deepening humanitarian challenges in the region.

While the Federal Government maintains that progress is being made in tackling insecurity, critics insist that more coordinated and aggressive strategies are urgently needed.

As of press time, the Presidency has yet to officially respond to the Senate’s recommendation.

The development highlights the mounting tension between sustaining democratic activities and ensuring the safety of citizens in a country still battling complex security challenges.
