Abati blasts Atiku: ‘Calling Jonathan inexperienced is condescending, rude, arrogance’

Arise Television anchor and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent comments about ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, branding them “condescending, rude, and steeped in arrogance.”

Speaking during a live broadcast on Arise News on Friday, Abati took issue with Atiku’s characterization of Jonathan as a “decent but inexperienced” leader—remarks made during a recent interview.

Atiku had argued that Jonathan’s alleged lack of experience contributed to governance challenges during his tenure and ultimately his defeat in the 2015 presidential election. He made the assertion while underscoring the need for experienced leadership and subtly positioning himself as a stronger alternative for Nigeria’s future.

But Abati was unsparing in his response.

“I think it’s condescending and very rude,” he said. “Jonathan was president of this country—a position that Atiku has not attained despite decades of ambition. To describe a former head of state as inexperienced smacks of arrogance.”

The veteran journalist went further, drawing a stark contrast between both men’s political journeys. He noted that while Jonathan has already reached the pinnacle of Nigeria’s leadership, Atiku remains in pursuit of the same office after multiple unsuccessful bids.

Abati’s remarks have added fuel to an already simmering political debate over leadership credentials, experience, and legacy—issues expected to dominate conversations ahead of future elections.
