JUST IN: Fresh horror in Jos as gunmen launch attack, several feared dead, govt imposes curfew
Panic gripped residents of Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday after gunmen launched a deadly attack, leaving several people feared dead.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, reportedly riding on a motorcycle, opened fire indiscriminately on youths near the Anguwan Rukuba junction in the evening, reports ThisDay.
“They just rode past and started shooting. People were running in all directions,” a resident told Channels Television.
The attack sparked outrage in the community, with angry youths blocking major roads, raising fears of further violence.
As of press time, the state police command, led by Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah, had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Govt Reacts with Curfew
In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North LGA to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The announcement was made by Information Commissioner Joyce Lohya Ramnap, who condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked.”
The curfew, which took effect from midnight Sunday, will run until April 1, 2026.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang assured residents that security forces have been deployed to restore calm, urging the public to remain vigilant and support ongoing investigations.
University of Jos Postpones Exams
The violence has disrupted academic activities at the University of Jos, with management announcing the postponement of examinations scheduled for March 30 and 31.
Deputy Registrar Emmanuel Madugu advised students and staff to avoid unnecessary movement and report suspicious activity.
Renewed Security Concerns
The latest attack underscores persistent insecurity in parts of Plateau State.
Just weeks earlier, at least 20 security personnel and vigilantes were killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Kanam LGA, highlighting the growing threat across communities in the region.
Authorities have appealed for calm as security operations intensify to track down those responsible.
