September will be characterized by intense rainfall, thunderstorms, flooding – NiMet warns
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released its monthly weather outlook for September 2025, highlighting a southward shift of rainfall, intensified thunderstorms in central states, and a gradual withdrawal of rains in the northern region.
The advisory, shared on the agency’s official X handle on Monday, warns of potential floods and hotter-than-usual conditions in parts of the country, reports Channels TV.
According to NiMet, southern states will enter the second peak of rains by the second week of September, with heavy and sustained rainfall raising the risk of flash and riverine flooding. Central states are expected to experience frequent thunderstorms alongside an elevated flood threat, while the northern region will see rainfall taper off later in the month, giving way to rising temperatures.
The agency cautioned that above normal rainfall is likely in central and southern states during the first three weeks of September, which could worsen flooding in vulnerable communities. It urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert to weather advisories and put preventive measures in place.
On temperature trends, NiMet projected slightly above normal heat in the south and hotter than usual conditions in the north from mid-to-late September. These shifts, the agency noted, could heighten risks of water borne diseases and lead to crop damage in areas affected by flooding.
The advisory also provided tailored guidance for key groups. Farmers were encouraged to plant early maturing crops and avoid water demanding varieties in the north to reduce losses. Emergency managers were advised to strengthen flood response systems, while communities were urged to clear drainage channels and prepare evacuation plans.
