Publish names of N330bn cash beneficiaries, Yoruba union challenges Tinubu
A Yoruba socio-cultural group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has called on President Bola Tinubu to publish the names of the beneficiaries of the N330billion cash transfers his administration claimed were disbursed to poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
The union alleged that the supposed beneficiaries were largely members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing the government’s claim as propaganda.
In a statement issued on Friday and jointly signed by the Convener, Olusola Badero, and the Home Director, Princess Balogun, the union criticised the government for what it described as deceit and insensitivity to the worsening plight of citizens.
The group said since Tinubu assumed office and removed fuel subsidy on his first day, Nigerians have been plunged into unbearable hardship, with many businesses collapsing and millions of citizens forced into begging for survival.
The union questioned how N25,000 monthly could sustain a family of four or five when the price of a bag of rice now exceeds N70,000.
They noted that the era of propaganda is over, as we now live in a digital world where nothing can be hidden.
The union explained that people in the Southwest are dying in poverty, while their own son in power is gambling with the destiny of the region and the future of the nation.
Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá further stated that thousands of parents have abandoned their responsibilities because they can no longer cope with the economic hardship. Many children have dropped out of school, while crimes and social vices continue to rise daily.
According to the group, since Tinubu took office, poverty levels have skyrocketed, while insecurity has worsened. It lamented that Nigerians, who once prided themselves on dignity and integrity, are now reduced to begging for survival.
The union further demanded that the government provide a comprehensive list of the beneficiaries, including their states, local governments, and wards, to prove transparency.
The statement read, “The era of propaganda is gone. We are in a digital world where nothing is hidden. Our people in the Southwest are dying in poverty, while their own son at the top is gambling with their destiny by exploiting the region’s political slot.
“Thousands of parents have abandoned their parental responsibilities, and many children have dropped out of school due to economic hardship and anti-people policies implemented by their so-called son.
“Since Tinubu assumed office, poverty and crime have skyrocketed across the country. People have set aside their dignity and integrity, forced to become beggars. ‘Omo Ori-ade’ has become both a stranger and a beggar in the land of his fathers.
“We are not asking for too much. As a government that claims to be transparent, let them publish the names of the beneficiaries of the cash transfers, alongside their states, local governments, and wards, for the world to see.
“Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá said the Tinubu administration should not claim to have disbursed N330 billion to 15 million Nigerians and then use that as an excuse to borrow more money from the World Bank or IMF. Nigerians will reject this outright.
“The Yoruba Union also called on the World Bank and IMF to stop granting loans to the Nigerian government to the detriment of the poor, whose conditions worsen as the government continues borrowing and increasing taxes just to repay suffocating debts.”Renewable energy solutions
Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá urged Nigerians to reject any attempt by the government to use unverifiable cash transfer claims as a justification for securing more foreign loans.
The group insisted that continued borrowing at the expense of the masses would only further entrench poverty, insecurity, and instability in the country.
