Nigeria pioneers plastic waste-to-diesel innovation, paving eay for sustainable future

In a groundbreaking move towards environmental sustainability, Nigeria has successfully demonstrated a cutting-edge plastic waste-to-diesel conversion technology, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards a circular and regenerative economy.
The innovative project, led by Premium Blue Economy Innovations and Investments Limited in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, showcases the power of African ingenuity meeting global sustainability standards.
The pyrolysis-based process transforms non-PET plastics into ultra-low sulphur diesel, synthetic gas, and industrial-grade carbon material, offering a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s environmental challenges.
“We focus on the plastics that most recyclers ignore – nylon bags, packaging materials, broken furniture, and household plastics,” said Gegele Yahya Olushola, Co-founder and CEO of Premium Blue Economy Innovations and Investments Limited.
“Through this innovation, we turn them into usable diesel, clean gas, and industrial-grade carbon material. This is not just recycling; it’s reindustrialization.”
The demonstration featured a vehicle powered by the locally produced diesel, which drove from Lagos to Abuja, proving the technology’s real-world viability. This achievement aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing sustainability, industrialization, and youth empowerment.
The Minister of Environment commended Premium Blue Economy for its groundbreaking contribution, emphasizing the project’s potential to contribute to Nigeria’s Paris Agreement goals, net-zero emissions target by 2060, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on clean energy, climate action, and sustainable production.
Representatives from the Bank of Industry, Nature News, and the Nigerian Plastic Action Partnership hailed the project as a blueprint for sustainable industrial transformation, highlighting Nigeria’s opportunity to turn waste into wealth through innovation and collaboration.
As Nigeria continues to push boundaries, Premium Blue Economy Innovations and Investments Limited reinforces its mission to catalyse the country’s shared and sustainable blue prosperity, proving that environmental innovation can drive economic transformation.
