Insecurity: Gunmen strike again in Anambra, abduct Rep, kill police orderly, driver, three others

Barely 48 hours after the gruesome murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of the late former DG of NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili, and five others in parts of Anambra State, gunmen struck today again in the State, killing a police officer, the driver of a member of the House of Representatives, representing Nnewi North and South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Chief Chris Azubuogu, and three others in different parts of the State.

Indeed, unconfirmed reports put the casualty figure at five.

According to reports, the police officer was killed in Ajalli community in the Orumba North Local Government Area of the State where a police station was also set ablaze.

A commentator in a video of the incident trending on social media said some people, including police officers, were trapped in the burning building where residents of the area were seen trying to rescue the trapped persons.

Azubuogu’s convoy, it was gathered, was attacked along Nnewi-Nnobi Road.

A video of the scene of the attack showed that one of his drivers was killed.

Sources said about three commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada riders operating in that area were also affected but it was not clear if they were killed or injured.

Confirming the incident, an aide to the highly regarded lawmaker, however, said his principal was not in any of the vehicles on the convoy when the incident happened.

“He was not in the vehicle. He was not in Anambra when it happened. The attack took place but he was not there. One of the drivers was killed,” the aide said.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Toochukwu Ikenga could not be reached for comments as at the time of this report.
