Gunmen attack Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy in Anambra, kill police escorts, Senator escapes by whiskers

The convoy of Ifeanyi Uba, the Senator representing Anambra South zone at the National Assembly, came under a hail of bullets from gunmen on Sunday, leaving at least three police escorts in the convoy dead by the time the smoke cleared.

The attack, being seen as as an assassination attempt, which took place at Enugwu Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state, reportedly left the Senator representing the Young Peoples Party (YPP), with injuries.

Eyewitnesses, reportedly said: “Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy came under attack in Enugwu Ukwu this evening. He was ambushed by heavily armed men who opened fire on his convoy. Some of his aides were killed, including some police officers.

“The Senator managed to escape as his car was riddled with bullets. I was driving up to that spot from the link road to the express when some people in a shop shouted at me and asked me to turn back and take another road, which I did,” Vanguard reports, saying the state police command is yet to react on the attack.

Other reports, circulating on the social media, presented gory sights of the mutilated bodies of the casualties, killed by the alleged hoodlums in police vehicles, while the vehicle in which the Senator rode, was not captured, even though some claim to have spoken to him and he confirmed that he was not fatally harmed.

The PUNCH, in its own report, quotes sources, as saying the gunmen, who opened fire on the convoy, mowed down six police operatives, after they responded during the incident, which happened late on Sunday, adding that although details of the incident were still sketchy, eyewitnesses, suspect an assassination attempt.

“Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was attacked today by some hoodlums in Enugwu Ukwu. It was a calculated attempt. It wasn’t an impromptu action. The policemen were about four in the convoy and they were attacked. All their arms were collected. The boys that spearheaded that attack were about nine in numbers,” the paper said in the report, quoting another source as saying that six policemen were actually killed in the attack.

It also quoted a close ally of the Senator, who confirmed the incident was quoted as saying: “Attempted assassination on the distinguished Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah. He survived it but there are casualties. Some policemen in his convoy were killed. I just spoke with him. He’s okay but told me there are casualties.”

It also quoted Toochukwu Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who also confirmed the attack but stated that casualty figure were still unknown, as saying: “The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Command, CP Echeng Echeng, has today(Sunday), led police operatives to the scene where sporadic shootings took place in Enug-Ukwu.

“Though the details of the incident are still sketchy, operatives are on the ground there as operations are going on and the situation is being monitored. Further details shall be communicated please.”
