Deborah Samuel: University don drops Muslim name in protest against student’s killing, picks native name

Dr Wulemat Adeyinka Bello-Olarinmoye exclusively told The Frontier in a chat this morning that “it’s in protest to the killing of that girl. I have decided to change from my Muslim name Wulemat to my native name Abeni. I can still be a Muslim with my native name.”

When asked if the matter (of Deborah’s killing) cannot be discussed progressively outside religion, the don, who hails from Ondo State said: “There’s no other progressive way to discuss extrajudicial killing based on blasphemy other than religion. Is it economic? Is it technological or scientific? No.

“I’m pained in a special way. Maybe because I’m a Muslim and I know they don’t have any basis in the Prophet’s (SAW) teaching to kill another ni o, or, because I feel horrible as a Nigerian whose government is irresponsible and despotic. I’m sha very angry. And I’ll fire on till I’m exhausted.”

Deborah Yakubu, a Christian student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto was burnt alive on Thursday by her Muslim schoolmates over alleged blasphemy.
