In another tragic incident, reminiscent of the attack in Kaduna few months ago, the Nigerian railway line, believed to have given succour to travellers daily being slain on Nigerian roads in recent years, has again come under the onslaught of gunmen.

This time, one person was said to have been killed while 10 others were abducted, as a set of dare-devil gunmen stormed a train-stop point in Ajaokuta, Kogi State on Monday afternoon in a commando-style.

The heavily armed gunmen, who reportedly arrived the scene at about 2pm, were said to have opened fire on a man identified as Dennis, said to be on his way to pick his boss from work and killed him instantly and thereafter, whisked away the other victims, majority of whom were residents of Ajaokuta, waiting for the train to arrive to unknown destinations.

The report, quoting a source in the village as saying that the kidnappers have contacted one of their victims’ families and demanded an N20 million ransom, also quoted another resident of the community, identified as Dele Ajala as saying that the community was in serious distress over the incident.

He said: “The latest kidnap has plunged some of the victim’s family into sorrow. This just goes to show how insecure the country is. There is a need to reinforce the state with adequate police officers to counter this kind of issue. Robbery, kidnapping has now become legal businesses in the country.

“It is appalling to see people fall victim to kidnapping on daily basis. This shows that the people cannot trust their government to secure them anymore”.

When contacted, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Ovye Aya, said the command is yet to be briefed about the incident, however promised to reach out to our correspondent as soon as he gets information about the incident.
