A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Tuesday, sentenced the country’s former president, Joseph Kabila, to death for treason.
However, the 54-year-old was absent from court throughout the proceedings.
He was convicted for complicity with the M23 anti-government armed group, which has seized the resource-rich Congolese east with the help of Rwandan forces.
Kabila, the son of the DR Congo’s late former President, Laurent Kabila, left the giant Central African country in 2023.
He took over as president in 2001 following the assassination of his father and ruled the country for 18 years.
Military prosecutor, Gen. Lucien Rene Likulia, during the proceedings demanded the death penalty for the ex-president.
He accused Kabila of plotting to overthrow President Felix Tshisekedi.
The ex-president was also tried for homicide, torture, and rape linked to M23.
